What is the TMUA?

The Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA) is a computer-based admissions test administered by Pearson VUE (UAT UK). It is used by Cambridge, Imperial, Warwick, LSE, Durham and UCL for mathematics, economics and computer-science courses — a strong TMUA score can also lead to a reduced A-level offer at some universities.

It is made up of two 75-minute papers of 20 multiple-choice questions each (2 hours 30 minutes in total). Scores are reported on a 1.0–9.0 scale. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so every question should be attempted, and no calculator is allowed. Cambridge applicants sit it in the October sitting — always confirm the requirement for your course and year.

Frequently asked questions

Which universities require the TMUA?

Cambridge, Imperial, Warwick, LSE, Durham and UCL use it for various maths, economics and computer-science courses. Always check the current requirement for your specific course and entry year.

Can I use a calculator?

No. The TMUA is sat without a calculator, so recalling and applying formulae quickly matters.

When is it taken?

It is sat at a Pearson VUE test centre; Cambridge applicants take the October sitting. Confirm dates for your cycle.
